Mexican Marigold, a.k.a Mexican Tarragon, is a plant native of Mexico and Central America. In Mexico, it is known as hierba de Santa Maria. It is also known as hierba de San Juan and sold as a substitute for Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s Wort).
Tagetes lucida is also used as a tea to treat the common cold, intestinal gas and diarrhea.
Mexican Marigold Tagetes lucida is recommended as a stimulant of the immune system, and to treat emotional and nervous complaints, such as anxiety, irritability and depression. It has been recorded in Spanish texts as a medicinal plant since the 16th century.
"Results support the anxiolytic and sedative-like properties of T. lucida in traditional medicine by involving serotonergic and GABAergic neurotransmission and coumarinic constituents." Perez-Ortega et al, 2016.
The pharmacological activity of Tagetes lucida extracts can be attributed in part to the presence of coumarin-type compounds, such as HN and DF, which have activity as potentiators of catalepsy and blockers of psychotic observed behaviours.
It is shown for the first time that T. lucida interacts with the dopaminergic and glutamatergic systems, both important mechanisms involved in psychosis. Sandra Liliana Porras-Dávila et al, 2022.
Tagetes lucida is said to exhibit powerful aphrodisiac effects in humans! Lim, 2014.
“In Mexico, juice that has been pressed from the herbage or crushed leaves are mixed with water or wine and drunk as an aphrodisiac.
A tea of the plant is also used as a stimulant. It has been recognized since Spanish Colonial times that Tagetes lucida has aphrodisiac effects.”
Tagetes lucida Mexican Marigold is reported to be smoked as a rite of passage in sexual shamanic rituals, most likely due to its aphrodisiac effects. Siegel et al. 1977
The Huichol of Mexico refer to the herb as Yauhtli & use the herb in religious ceremonies, sometimes combined with tobacco. Rätsch, 2005.
The Aztecs used the herb in ceremonies related to the dead. Gutiérrez et al, 2014.
